First Annual Umpqua Hula and the Arts Multicultural Festival
ROSEBURG—Fans of Hawaiian music are in for a rare treat in southern Oregon this summer. The First Annual Umpqua Hula and the Arts Multicultural Festival features not one, but four highly acclaimed musical groups from Hawai’i. The two-day event takes place August 21-22, 2010 in the beautiful, grassy Swanson Amphitheatre on the campus of Umpqua Community College. It is hosted by He Kula Na Mea Hawai’i (The School of Things Hawaiian), a non-profit organization dedicated to the perpetuation of the Hawaiian cultural heritage.
Saturday’s lineup includes the venerable Makaha Sons and Darlene Ahuna. Winners of countless Na Hoku Hanohano Awards (Hawai’i’s equivalent to the GRAMMY®) and recently recognized with Life Time Achievement Awards by the Hawai’i Academy of Recording Arts, the Makaha Sons have committed themselves to perpetuating traditional Hawaiian music throughout Hawai’i and the world for the past 30 years. As an esteemed ambassador of Hawaiian music, Darlene is an award-winning vocalist best known for her seamless falsetto renditions of traditional Hawaiian and hapa-haole standards.
Sunday’s headliners include three time Grammy nominee Amy Hanaiali’i Gilliom and Na Palapalai. As Hawai’i’s top-selling female vocalist and winner of 15 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, Amy has toured extensively around the globe, and she has opened for numerous recording artists, including Carlos Santana, Willie Nelson, Joe Cocker, The Beach Boys, Boz Skaggs, and Sergio Mendes to name a few. Renowned for their ability to take traditional Hawaiian songs and magically rearrange them into contemporary classics, the duo of Na Palapalai is a beloved favorite of hula dancers around the world. Their heavenly falsetto harmonies have garnered them numerous awards including “Hawaiian Album of the Year,” “Hawaiian Group of the Year,” and “Hawaiian Language Performance of the Year.”
Also featured will be hula performances by Halau Hula Na Pua O Hawai’i Nei and Halau Hula O Aulani and appearances by Tahara Tribe (tribal belly dancing), Ha’ena, (contemporary Hawaiian music), Theo’s Jazzotope (jazz standards), Pili Moreno (contemporary Hawaiian music), Ricardo Cardenas (Latin American music), and Halau Hula Kaaumoana. Other offerings include a host of local arts and crafts vendors, an antique show, award-winning wines of the southern Oregon region and wonderful food. There will also be a non-denominational church service on Sunday.
Tickets are $15 for one day and $25 for a weekend pass. Children 12 and under are free. Concerts are lawn seating.
