(During Asian Celebration Weekend)

Learn from the masters, up close and personal, in this series of ukulele workshops as well as the Cultural Arts workshops being offered as part of the Mele Ohana Hawaiian Cultural Weekend at the Asian Celebration.

Workshop Schedule

Master Series Ukulele Workshops

10:30-11:30, 12:00-1:00 – Steven Espaniola (Beginning, Beginning/Intermediate

1:30-2:30, 3:00-4:00 – Herb Ohta Jr. (Intermediate/Advanced, Advanced)

Cost: $20 per workshop – includes instructional materials an handouts. Ukes available for beginning students or for those who do not have their own ukuleles. Workshop descriptions will be available on the Mele Ohana and Asian Celebration site by mid-January.

10:30-11:30 – Beginning hula w/Carol McIntyre. Workshop fee: $3

12:00-1:00 – Lei Making With Eyelash Yarn w/Mona Byrne and Jan Barnett. Workshop fee: $5

1:30-2:30 – Ribbon Lei Making w/Mona Byrne and Jan Barnett. Workshop fee: $5

3:00-4:00 – Hawaiian Card Making w/Sharon Kealoha. Max. 20. Workshop fee: $5

Halau Hula Classes & Native traditions of the Hawai'ian Islands

Weekly instructional classes will soon be offered by Kumu Pekelo Day in Eugene, OR. This will be an ongoing monthly schedule and includes optional workshops. Maui born Pekelo Day is a native Hawai'ian cultural practitioner who has taught for over 38 years, sharing the knowledge passed on to him by his ancestors.

 

MONDAYS 6pm - 7:30pm Kupuna Wahine (senior women)

MONDAYS 7:30pm - 9pm Kane (men), all ages

 

TUESDAYS 6pm - 7:30pm Beginners, all ages

TUESDAYS 7:30pm - 9pm Intermediate & Advanced Wahine (women)

 

Many of Kumu Pekelo day's students have been inspired to create careers dedicated to perpetuating Hawai'ian culture and native traditions. Notable among his students are Kealii Reichel and Uluwhei Guerrero, both well-known Hawai'ian recording artists. Pekelo Day has also recorded a CD of traditional Hawai'ian chants available at Ululoa Productions. (www.ululoa.com)
